Blackberry Roll

- Sift together the flour, salt, baking powder, and sugar.
- Work in the shortening as for biscuits until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add water gradually to moisten the mixture, then knead for 1 minute.
- Roll out the dough to about 1/2-inch thickness on a floured surface.
- Spread the dough with fresh or prepared berries.
- Sprinkle sugar over the berries and dot with small pieces of butter.
- Roll up the dough tightly and place in a buttered baking dish.
- Combine 1 cup sugar, water, and 2 tablespoons butter in a saucepan and bring to a boil.
- Add vanilla extract to the hot syrup and pour it over the rolled dough.
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 45 minutes or until done and the syrup has thickened.
- Serve warm with milk or ice cream.
