- Put sugar, cocoa, canned milk, water, and margarine in a 2-quart kettle. Stir until thoroughly mixed.
- Cook to 234° to 236° F; remove from heat.
- Add vanilla to the mixture.
- Set the kettle in a pan of cold water to cool rapidly.
- Do not stir until cooled.
- When you can touch the bottom of the pan with your hand, add chopped or whole nuts.
- Beat the mixture until it first loses its gloss.
- Immediately pour onto wax paper and spread as desired, or pour into a greased pan.
