Ingredients

  • 3 cups soft bread crumbs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup fruit (fruit cocktail, sliced and chopped peaches, chopped apples, or light raisins)

Instructions

  1. Place bread crumbs in a 1 1/2 quart baking dish.
  2. Mix milk, melted butter, sugar, eggs, salt (if using), cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla together.
  3. Pour the mixture over the bread crumbs.
  4. Dot with 2 tablespoons more of butter.
  5. Place the baking dish in a larger pan.
  6. Pour 1 to 1 1/2 inches of hot water into the larger pan to create a water bath.
  7. Bake at 350°F for 40 minutes or until a silver knife inserted comes out clean.
  8. Serve warm with sauce or whipped cream.
