Ingredients

  • 2 cups hot peppers
  • 1/2 cup vinegar
  • 1 1/2 cups vinegar

Instructions

  1. Chop the hot peppers and mix with 1/2 cup vinegar. Let stand for 30 minutes.
  2. Add the remaining vinegar and all of the ketchup.
  3. Simmer the mixture for 15 to 20 minutes.
  4. Pour the hot sauce into sterilized jars and seal.

Tips & Substitutions

For a milder sauce, consider substituting some of the hot peppers with sweeter varieties like bell peppers. You can also experiment with different types of vinegar, such as apple cider vinegar, for a unique flavor. Make sure to wear gloves when handling hot peppers to avoid irritation. Letting the mixture sit longer enhances the flavor, so feel free to adjust the standing time based on your preference.

Serving Suggestions

This hot sauce is versatile and can be drizzled over Barbecued Country Spareribs for a spicy kick. It's also great in marinades, on tacos, or mixed into dips for added heat. Consider serving it alongside Stewed Tomatoes And Okra(Diabetic) to balance the flavors with some heat.

Storage & Reheating

Once bottled, store your hot sauce in a cool, dark place. It can last for several months if properly sealed. After opening, refrigerate the sauce to maintain its freshness and flavor. If you find the sauce is too thick after storage, simply add a bit of vinegar to thin it out before using.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I adjust the heat level of the hot sauce?

Absolutely! You can modify the heat by using fewer hot peppers or a mix of peppers with varying heat levels. If you prefer a spicier sauce, consider adding some crushed red pepper flakes or a dash of cayenne pepper during the simmering process.

How long does the hot sauce last once opened?

Once opened and refrigerated, your homemade hot sauce can last for about 6 months. Always check for any changes in color or smell before using it, and if it looks or smells off, it's best to discard it.

Can I use dried peppers instead of fresh ones?

Yes, you can use dried peppers, but you'll need to rehydrate them first. Soak the dried peppers in hot water for about 30 minutes until they soften, then chop and proceed with the recipe. This can add a distinct flavor to your hot sauce.
