Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons shortening or margarine
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1/2 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Sift together the flour, salt, sugar, cocoa, and baking soda.
  2. Add milk, vanilla, and shortening to the dry ingredients and mix until smooth.
  3. Pour the batter into an 8 x 8-inch pan.
  4. Mix 3/4 cup brown sugar and 1/4 cup cocoa and sprinkle evenly over the batter.
  5. Pour 1 3/4 cups hot water over the mixture.
  6. Bake at 350°F for 40 to 45 minutes until the pudding forms on the bottom.
