- Cream together butter with half cup sugar.
- In a separate pot, bring to a boil: 1/2 cup milk, water, nutmeg, and vanilla.
- Make a dough by mixing flour, baking powder, salt, shortening, and 1/2 cup milk.
- Roll out the dough to 1/8-inch thickness.
- Spread the butter and sugar mixture over the dough, then roll it up as for a jelly roll.
- Cut the rolled dough into 1-inch slices and place them in a large greased shallow baking dish.
- Pour the syrup from the boiling mixture over the rolls.
- Bake at 375°F for about 30 minutes until the syrup thickens.
- Optional: sprinkle with cinnamon before baking.
