Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 5 tablespoons shortening

Instructions

  1. Cream together butter with half cup sugar.
  2. In a separate pot, bring to a boil: 1/2 cup milk, water, nutmeg, and vanilla.
  3. Make a dough by mixing flour, baking powder, salt, shortening, and 1/2 cup milk.
  4. Roll out the dough to 1/8-inch thickness.
  5. Spread the butter and sugar mixture over the dough, then roll it up as for a jelly roll.
  6. Cut the rolled dough into 1-inch slices and place them in a large greased shallow baking dish.
  7. Pour the syrup from the boiling mixture over the rolls.
  8. Bake at 375°F for about 30 minutes until the syrup thickens.
  9. Optional: sprinkle with cinnamon before baking.
