Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 packages yeast
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 6 1/2 to 7 cups flour
  • 2 cups buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Heat buttermilk until it separates and is warm.
  2. Combine sugar and salt with buttermilk in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Dissolve yeast in the mixture; stir in the egg.
  4. Add shortening; add half of the flour, stirring well.
  5. Add remaining flour gradually, stirring until dough leaves the side of the bowl.
  6. Place the dough in a greased bowl.
  7. Cover with a damp cloth and refrigerate for 1 hour.
  8. Punch down the dough and shape into rolls.
  9. Place the rolls on a baking sheet.
  10. Let the rolls rise in a warm place.
  11. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 12 to 15 minutes.
