- Heat buttermilk until it separates and is warm.
- Combine sugar and salt with buttermilk in a large mixing bowl.

- Add shortening; add half of the flour, stirring well.
- Add remaining flour gradually, stirring until dough leaves the side of the bowl.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl.
- Cover with a damp cloth and refrigerate for 1 hour.
- Punch down the dough and shape into rolls.
- Place the rolls on a baking sheet.
- Let the rolls rise in a warm place.
- Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 12 to 15 minutes.
