Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp. butter or margarine, softened
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 egg, well beaten
  • 1 c. milk
  • 2 c. flour, sifted
  • 1 Tbsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • shortening or vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, cream butter or margarine and sugar together until light.
  2. Add egg and milk. Stir until well blended.
  3. Sift flour a second time with baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.
  4. Add enough of the flour mixture to the butter-sugar mixture to make a soft dough.
  5. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  6. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and roll into 1/3-inch thick.
  7. Cut with a doughnut cutter.
  8. In a deep skillet or deep fryer, heat vegetable oil or shortening to 365°F.
  9. Fry doughnuts until golden brown on both sides, avoiding overcrowding.
  10. Drain on absorbent paper and dust with powdered sugar or granulated sugar.
