- Melt butter in a small saucepan over low heat.
- Add brown sugar to the melted butter, heat, and stir constantly until the mixture becomes thick and syrupy.
- Remove from heat and divide the syrup evenly into two 8-inch layer cake pans.
- Core and slice the apples.
- Arrange the apple slices attractively in the syrup in each cake pan.
- Prepare the spice cake mix according to package instructions.
- Pour the prepared batter over the apples and syrup in each pan.
- Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow to cool slightly before removing from pans and serving.
