Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons almond extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Mix all the ingredients, except the red food coloring.
  2. Divide the dough in half.
  3. Add the red food coloring to one half of the dough and knead until evenly colored.
  4. Roll approximately 1 teaspoon of each color dough into 4-inch strips.
  5. Twist the two colors together to create a candy cane effect.
  6. Place the twisted dough strips on an ungreased cookie sheet.
  7. Curve the top of each strip downward to form a candy cane shape.
  8. Bake for 9 minutes at 375°F.
