Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 1/3 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 medium apple (Cortland, Idared, or Jonathan), peeled, cored, and chopped
  • 3/4 cup light brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Grease and flour an 8-inch square baking pan.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Cut in 1 1/2 sticks (3/4 cup) of butter or margarine using a pastry blender or two knives until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Stir in milk and the beaten egg with a fork, mixing lightly until the mixture just clings together and forms a soft dough.
  6. Fold in the chopped apple.
  7. Sprinkle the brown sugar evenly over the batter.
  8. Sprinkle the rolled oats on top.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for about 40 minutes or until golden brown.
