Ingredients

  • 4 tomatoes, quartered
  • 1/3 cup green pepper, chopped fine
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 cup malt vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • nonnutritive sweetener (equal to 1 cup sugar)
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/8 teaspoon crushed anise seed
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon mace

Instructions

  1. Puree the tomatoes, green pepper, and milk until smooth.
  2. Pour the mixture into a pan; add the malt vinegar, salt, and nonnutritive sweetener.
  3. Tie the cinnamon, allspice, crushed anise seed, ground mustard, red pepper, and mace loosely in cheesecloth and add to the pan.
  4. Simmer uncovered until the mixture is reduced by about half, stirring occasionally.
  5. Remove the spice bag before serving.
