Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. Nestle semi-sweet chocolate morsels
  • 2 1/4 cups plain flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs, separated
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup sweet milk

Instructions

  1. Melt the semi-sweet chocolate morsels over hot water and set aside to cool.
  2. Sift together the plain flour, baking powder, and salt; set aside.
  3. Blend shortening and sugar until well combined.
  4. Beat in egg yolks, one at a time, with vanilla and melted chocolate.
  5. Stir in the flour mixture alternately with sweet milk.
  6. Beat egg whites until stiff, but not dry.
  7. Fold the beaten egg whites into the batter gently.
  8. Pour the batter evenly into two 9-inch cake pans.
  9. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 50 to 55 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  10. Allow the cakes to cool before frosting with your favorite homemade chocolate icing.
