Challah Bread(Easter Bread)

- Mix 1 1/4 cups flour, the yeast, sugar, and salt in a bowl.
- Heat water and 1 tablespoon vegetable oil until very warm.
- Add the warm water mixture to the flour mixture.
- Beat for 1 minute until well combined.
- Beat in the egg until smooth.
- Stir in additional flour gradually to form a manageable dough.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface.
- Knead for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl.
- Cover and let rise for 1 1/2 to 2 hours until doubled in size.
- Grease a cookie sheet.
- Punch down the risen dough and divide into 3 equal parts.
- Roll each part into a 14-inch long rope.
- Place the ropes on the cookie sheet and braid loosely without stretching.
- Form the braided dough into a wreath and secure the ends.
- Brush the braid with vegetable oil.
- Cover and let rise for 40 to 50 minutes until nearly doubled.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Mix the egg yolk with 2 tablespoons cold water.
- Brush this mixture over the braided dough.
- Sprinkle with poppy seeds if desired.
- Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown.
- Remove from oven and transfer to a wire rack to cool.
- Place colored Easter eggs in the center for a festive presentation.
