Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 package quick active yeast
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 tablespoons cold water
  • vegetable oil
  • poppy seeds (optional)

Instructions

  1. Mix 1 1/4 cups flour, the yeast, sugar, and salt in a bowl.
  2. Heat water and 1 tablespoon vegetable oil until very warm.
  3. Add the warm water mixture to the flour mixture.
  4. Beat for 1 minute until well combined.
  5. Beat in the egg until smooth.
  6. Stir in additional flour gradually to form a manageable dough.
  7. Turn the dough onto a floured surface.
  8. Knead for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  9. Place the dough in a greased bowl.
  10. Cover and let rise for 1 1/2 to 2 hours until doubled in size.
  11. Grease a cookie sheet.
  12. Punch down the risen dough and divide into 3 equal parts.
  13. Roll each part into a 14-inch long rope.
  14. Place the ropes on the cookie sheet and braid loosely without stretching.
  15. Form the braided dough into a wreath and secure the ends.
  16. Brush the braid with vegetable oil.
  17. Cover and let rise for 40 to 50 minutes until nearly doubled.
  18. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  19. Mix the egg yolk with 2 tablespoons cold water.
  20. Brush this mixture over the braided dough.
  21. Sprinkle with poppy seeds if desired.
  22. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown.
  23. Remove from oven and transfer to a wire rack to cool.
  24. Place colored Easter eggs in the center for a festive presentation.
