Ingredients

  • 8 slices buttered bread, cubed
  • 1 lb. grated sharp cheese
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups milk or half and half
  • 1/2 cup medium white wine
  • 1 tsp. dry mustard
  • 1 tsp. salt

Instructions

  1. Alternate layers of buttered bread cubes and grated sharp cheese in a buttered casserole dish.
  2. Beat eggs until thick and frothy.
  3. Add milk or half and half, white wine, dry mustard, and salt to the beaten eggs.
  4. Pour the egg mixture over the bread and cheese layers.
  5. Let the casserole stand in the refrigerator for several hours or overnight to absorb flavors.
  6. Bring the casserole to room temperature before baking.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 1 hour until golden and set.
