- Peel potatoes and slice them into 1/4-inch thick slices.
- Slice the onion into thin rings, if using.
- Cook the sliced potatoes and onion until tender.
- Butter a glass dish and place half of the sliced potatoes in the dish.
- Cover the potatoes with slices of cheese and pats of butter.
- Add the remaining sliced potatoes on top.
- Cover with more cheese and pats of butter.
- Pour milk over the layered potatoes.
- Melt the cheese in the oven or microwave if needed.
- Serve warm.
