- Wash and dry the chicken pieces.
- In a 10-inch skillet, heat the butter and add the chicken to brown on both sides.
- Remove the chicken and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
- Arrange the chicken in a heavy 4-quart casserole or Dutch oven.
- Remove all but 2 tablespoons of fat from the skillet.
- Mix in the sauerkraut, onion strips, and apple slices.
- Place the mixture on top of the chicken.
- Cover tightly and bake in a 325°F oven for about 1 hour until the chicken is tender.
