Ingredients

  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1 Tbsp. Crisco
  • 3 c. water
  • 1 can tomato soup
  • 3 Tbsp. ketchup
  • 2 Tbsp. chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • salt

Instructions

  1. Brown ground beef and Crisco in a saucepan.
  2. Drain the grease from the beef.
  3. Add water to the beef in the saucepan.
  4. Mix tomato soup, ketchup, chili powder, baking soda, salt, pepper, and sugar in a bowl.
  5. Add the mixed ingredients to the beef in the saucepan.
  6. Bring to a boil and cook until thickened. If not thick enough, thicken with flour mixed with water or bread crumbs.

Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider adding diced onions and garlic while browning the beef. If you prefer a spicier kick, incorporate diced jalapeños or a splash of hot sauce. Substituting ground turkey or chicken for the beef can lighten the dish. If tomato soup isn't on hand, crushed tomatoes or tomato sauce can serve as an alternative.

Serving Suggestions

Serve this chili on top of hamburgers for a hearty twist, or alongside cornbread for a comforting meal. It pairs beautifully with Alabama Dip as an appetizer. Garnish with shredded cheese, diced onions, or a dollop of sour cream for added flavor. A side salad or tortilla chips can complement the dish well.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftover chili in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, gently warm on the stove over low heat, stirring occasionally. You can also microwave it in a microwave-safe container, heating in short intervals until hot. For longer storage, consider freezing the chili for up to 3 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this chili in advance?

Yes, this chili can be made ahead of time. In fact, the flavors often deepen and improve after a day in the fridge. Just reheat on the stove or in the microwave when ready to serve.

What can I do if my chili is too thin?

If your chili isn't thickening as desired, you can mix a tablespoon of flour with a bit of water to create a slurry, then stir it into the chili. Alternatively, let it simmer uncovered for longer to allow excess liquid to evaporate.

Can I customize the spice level?

Absolutely! You can adjust the chili powder to taste or add other spices such as cayenne pepper or paprika for extra heat. For a milder chili, reduce the amount of chili powder or omit it altogether.
