Choco-Date Cake

Ingredients

  • 1 c. chopped dates
  • 1 c. boiling water
  • 2/3 c. shortening
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 3/4 c. cake flour
  • 2 Tbsp. cocoa
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 (6 oz.) pkg. chocolate pieces (1 c.)
  • 1 c. chopped California walnuts

Instructions

  1. Combine dates and boiling water; cool to room temperature. Stir shortening to soften; cream in sugar until fluffy.
  2. Blend in vanilla.
  3. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well.
  4. Sift together cake flour, cocoa, soda and salt; add to creamed mix alternately with date mix, beating well after each addition.
