Ingredients

  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 3/4 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 cups coarsely chopped apples
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Grease two 9 x 5-inch loaf pans.
  2. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  3. In a small bowl, combine flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Set aside.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  5. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  6. Mix in buttermilk and vanilla extract.
  7. Fold in the chopped apples and chopped walnuts.
  8. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing just until combined.
  9. Stir in the semi-sweet chocolate chips.
  10. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared loaf pans.
  11. Bake in the preheated oven for about 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  12. Allow to cool in pans for 10 minutes, then remove and cool completely on a wire rack.
