Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/4 cups sifted flour
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water in a mixing bowl.
  2. Add shortening, sugar, cocoa, salt, and 1 cup of flour. Mix well.
  3. Stir in the remaining 1 1/4 cups of flour and blend well, scraping down the bowl.
  4. Add the egg and beat for 2 minutes at medium speed with a mixer or beat 300 strokes by hand.
  5. Scrape down the bowl.
  6. Cover with a cloth and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  7. Stir down the dough, beating about 25 strokes.
