- Preheat oven to 375°F and grease a 12 x 8 x 2-inch baking pan.
- Sift together the flour, salt, soda, and baking powder; set aside.
- Cream together the shortening, white sugar, and 1/4 cup brown sugar until creamy.
- Add the egg yolk, water, and vanilla; mix well.
- Thoroughly mix in the sifted flour mixture.
- Pat the dough into the prepared baking pan.
- Sprinkle the semi-sweet chocolate chips evenly over the dough.
- Beat the egg white until stiff, then gradually beat in 1/2 cup brown sugar to make a meringue.
- Spread the meringue over the chocolate chips evenly.
- Bake for about 25 minutes or until done.
- Cut into squares while warm and cool in the pan before serving.
