Ingredients

  • 1 (1 lb.) loaf unsliced white bread, crusts trimmed
  • 2 c. milk
  • 5 eggs
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1/2 to 3/4 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla
  • pinch of nutmeg
  • oil (for deep frying)
  • whipped butter
  • maple syrup

Instructions

  1. Cut the bread into 4 x 2 x 2-inch rectangular logs and let them dry slightly.
  2. Blend milk, eggs, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and nutmeg in a medium bowl.
  3. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan large enough to hold the bread in a single layer.
  4. Arrange the bread in the milk mixture, turning to coat all sides.
  5. Chill until the liquid is absorbed, for several hours or overnight.
