Ingredients

  • 2 1/3 cups sifted flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 4 cups diced pared apples (about 1 1/2 lb.)
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 2 eggs

Instructions

  1. Into a large bowl of an electric mixer, sift together flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and spices.
  2. Add diced apples, shortening, chopped walnuts, and lightly beaten eggs to the dry ingredients.
  3. Beat until well mixed.
  4. Turn the batter into a greased and floured round spring-form pan or divide into two 9-inch layer cake pans.
  5. Bake in a preheated 325°F oven for 45 minutes or until the cake tests done.
  6. Allow to cool, then remove from pans.
  7. Frost with caramel frosting, if desired.
