Cornish Pasties

Hearty Cornish pasties feature tender meat, potatoes, and turnips wrapped in flaky pastry, perfect for a filling meal or picnic, with rich, savory flavors.

Ingredients

  • 2 to 3 lb. chuck roast
  • 1 large onion
  • 2 large potatoes
  • 1 large turnip
  • salt
  • pepper

Instructions

  1. Peel onion; set in the same pan as the meat and roast until fairly tender.
  2. Cut meat and onion into small pieces.
  3. Boil potatoes and turnip; dice.
  4. Mix the diced potatoes and turnip with the cooked meat and onion.
  5. Add salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Roll out pastry fairly thin, about 1/4 inch.
  7. Cut the pastry into rounds the size of a saucer.
  8. Put meat mixture in the center of each pastry round.
  9. Bring two opposite sides of the pastry together at the top and flute the edges to seal.
  10. Brush the pasties with beaten egg.
  11. Bake in a hot 425°F oven for 30 to 40 minutes.
