Ingredients

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 5 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Cream the shortening until smooth and fluffy.
  2. Add sugar gradually and continue creaming until well combined.
  3. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then stir in vanilla.
  4. Sift together flour, soda, and salt.
  5. Alternately add the flour mixture and buttermilk to the creamed mixture, beginning and ending with the flour.
  6. Pour batter into a greased and floured tube pan.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 1 hour or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
