Dark Date Nut Bread

Ingredients

  • 1 c. chopped dates
  • 1 c. boiling water
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 c. flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2/3 c. sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. shortening
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 c. chopped nuts

Instructions

  1. Put soda and salt on dates.
  2. Cover with boiling water.
  3. Add shortening.
  4. Let stand until cold.
  5. Add sugar and egg.
  6. Add flour gradually.
  7. Add vanilla and nuts.
  8. Bake in loaf pan for 1 hour at 350°.
