Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter flavored Crisco melted
  • confectioners sugar
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons orange peel grated
  • 3/4 cup plus 4 to 6 tablespoons flour

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine buttermilk, egg yolks, sugar, vanilla, grated orange peel, and salt.
  2. Slowly blend in melted Crisco and stir in 3/4 cup of flour.
  3. Place the dough on a floured board and knead in enough remaining flour to make a soft dough.
  4. Roll the dough into a 12 x 12-inch square on a floured surface.
  5. Cut the square into 4 x 1 1/2-inch strips.
  6. Make a 1-inch slit down the middle of each strip and pull one end through the slit to form a bow.
  7. In a deep saucepan, heat 2 inches of Crisco to 375°F.
  8. Fry several bowties at a time for about 1 1/2 minutes or until golden brown.
  9. Drain on paper towels.
  10. Sift confectioners sugar over both sides of the fried bowties before serving.
