Deep-Fried Bowties

- In a small bowl, combine buttermilk, egg yolks, sugar, vanilla, grated orange peel, and salt.
- Slowly blend in melted Crisco and stir in 3/4 cup of flour.
- Place the dough on a floured board and knead in enough remaining flour to make a soft dough.
- Roll the dough into a 12 x 12-inch square on a floured surface.
- Cut the square into 4 x 1 1/2-inch strips.
- Make a 1-inch slit down the middle of each strip and pull one end through the slit to form a bow.
- In a deep saucepan, heat 2 inches of Crisco to 375°F.
- Fry several bowties at a time for about 1 1/2 minutes or until golden brown.
- Drain on paper towels.
- Sift confectioners sugar over both sides of the fried bowties before serving.
