Ingredients

  • 3 1/4 cups plain flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 packages active dry yeast
  • 1 1/3 cups lukewarm water
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 1/3 cup instant dry milk
  • 1 stick butter

Instructions

  1. Sift dry ingredients (flour, sugar, salt, dry yeast, dry milk) together in a bowl.
  2. Measure lukewarm water in a separate bowl. Add yeast and 1/2 teaspoon of the flour mixture. Stir and set aside to activate.
  3. Cut shortening into the remaining flour mixture until well combined.
  4. Add the water mixture to the flour and shortening mixture. Mix until combined.
  5. Turn the dough onto a floured board and knead until smooth and elastic.
  6. Let the dough rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  7. Punch down the dough and knead briefly. Pinch off pieces and shape into rolls.
  8. Place the rolls in a greased 13 x 9-inch baking pan.
  9. Brush the rolls with melted butter. Let rise again until doubled, about 30 minutes.
  10. Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 10 to 15 minutes or until golden brown.
