Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter or margarine
  • 4 squares unsweetened chocolate (4 oz.)
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups coarsely chopped walnuts
  • 1 package semi-sweet chocolate pieces

Instructions

  1. Melt butter and unsweetened chocolate in a medium-size pan over moderate heat.
  2. Remove from heat.
  3. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  4. Beat in sugar gradually with a wooden spoon until thoroughly combined.
  5. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition; stir in vanilla.
  6. Stir in sifted all-purpose flour until thoroughly combined.
  7. Stir in 1 1/2 cups of coarsely chopped walnuts.
  8. Spread the batter into a greased 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan.
  9. Combine the remaining 1/2 cup of walnuts with semi-sweet chocolate pieces.
  10. Sprinkle the chocolate-walnut mixture over the top of the brownie batter, pressing down lightly.
  11. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 to 35 minutes or until the top springs back lightly when touched.
  12. Cool completely in the pan or on a wire rack.
  13. Cut into squares and serve.
