Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 2/3 cups sifted flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Cream sugar and butter or margarine until light and fluffy.
  2. Beat in egg yolks, one at a time, along with vanilla.
  3. Resift flour with baking powder and salt.
  4. Add dry ingredients to butter mixture with milk, beating until smooth.
  5. Beat egg whites until stiff; add 1/4 teaspoon salt.
  6. Gently fold egg whites into batter.
  7. Pour batter into three greased and floured cake pans.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes.
