  1. Set out cream cheese and allow to warm to room temperature, about 2 hours.
  2. Put onion soup in a 1-cup Pyrex measuring cup and add milk until the level reaches 1/2 cup.
  3. Do not add a whole 1/2 cup of milk at once; add gradually as needed.
  4. Allow the mixture to stand at room temperature for 45 minutes with occasional stirring, until the mixture hydrates and onion bits are soft.
  5. Peel garlic cloves and chop very fine or run through a garlic press.
