A layered dressed herring salad resembling a cake, featuring tender herring, boiled vegetables, eggs, and mayonnaise, perfect for festive occasions or a hearty appetizer.

Ingredients

  • 2 thick salted herrings
  • 5 potatoes
  • 4 carrots
  • 4 beets
  • 5 eggs
  • 1 3/4 cups mayonnaise

Instructions

  1. Boil potatoes, carrots, and beets until tender in one pan.
  2. Boil eggs until hard-boiled.
  3. Peel the skin from the salted herrings and cut them along the spine.
  4. Remove all bones from the herrings.
  5. Cut herring meat into very small pieces, checking for bones.
  6. Spread herring meat evenly over the bottom of a large dish.
  7. Optional: Add small pieces of onion on top of the herring.
  8. Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise over the herring layer.
  9. Grate the boiled potatoes and spread as the next layer.
  10. Spread another thin layer of mayonnaise over the potatoes.
  11. Use a fork to gently level the layers.
  12. Grate and spread the carrots over the previous layer.
  13. Grate and spread the 4 eggs over the carrots.
  14. Grate and spread the beets over the eggs.
  15. Spread mayonnaise on top of the beets and grate 1 egg on top for decoration.
  16. Chill the dish in the refrigerator for 1 hour before serving.
