Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Combine shortening and brown sugar in a mixing bowl and beat until fluffy.
  2. Add egg and beat well.
  3. Stir in molasses and mix thoroughly.
  4. Sift together the flour, salt, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, and ground cloves.
  5. Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and mix until combined.
  6. Chill the dough for easier handling.
  7. Roll the chilled dough into 1-inch balls.
  8. Roll each ball in granulated sugar.
  9. Place the balls 2 inches apart on a lightly greased baking sheet.
  10. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 12 to 15 minutes.
