Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. yeast
  • 1/4 cup melted shortening
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 4 1/2 cups flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/3 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup warm water in a large bowl.
  2. Add melted shortening, sugar, buttermilk, flour, baking powder, soda, and salt in the order given, mixing well after each addition.
  3. Roll the dough on a floured surface to about 1/2 inch thickness.
  4. Cut into biscuits with a biscuit cutter.
  5. Place biscuits in a greased pan.
  6. Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F for 15 to 20 minutes, or until golden brown.
