Ingredients

  • 5 cups flour
  • 4 teaspoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 and 1/2 cups Crisco (lard)
  • 1 egg
  • cold water

Instructions

  1. Combine dry ingredients: flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder.
  2. Cut in the shortening (Crisco/lard) until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Place the egg in a cup measure.
  4. Add cold water to the egg to make a scant cupful.
  5. Beat the egg-water mixture until combined.
  6. Sprinkle the egg-water mixture over the flour mixture and mix with a fork until crumbly.
  7. Divide the dough into 5 or 6 portions.
  8. Roll out each portion on a floured board into pie shapes.
  9. Use as desired to make pies.
