Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Cream shortening with 1 cup sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Sift together the flour, soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add alternately 1 cup buttermilk with the dry ingredients to the shortening-sugar mixture, beginning and ending with dry ingredients.
  4. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Pour the batter into a greased and floured 8 1/2-inch square pan.
  6. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
