Everybody's Cake is a moist, spiced raisin cake infused with cinnamon and cloves, perfect for sharing at family gatherings, with optional nuts and honey for added richness.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 pound raisins
  • 2 teaspoons cloves
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 4 cups sifted flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts

Instructions

  1. Cook the first six ingredients in a large kettle for 20 minutes, covered.
  2. Set aside to cool.
  3. Add sifted flour, baking soda, honey, and nuts to the cooled mixture.
  4. Mix well until combined.
  5. Pour the batter into a 13 x 9-inch pan.
  6. Bake at 325°F for 1 hour until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. May be iced, powdered sugar, or served plain.
