Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/3 cup butter or margarine
  • 7/8 cup buttermilk or vinegar plus enough milk to make 7/8 cup

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 450°F (232°C).
  2. Mix flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar in a medium bowl with a wire whisk.
  3. Cut in butter with a pastry cutter or two knives until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Add buttermilk all at once and stir briefly with a fork until the mixture just comes together.
  5. Dollop biscuits onto an ungreased cookie sheet.
  6. Bake for 10 minutes, then brush tops with melted butter.
  7. Continue to bake for an additional 3 to 5 minutes or until golden brown.
