Ingredients

  • 1 cup plus 1 tablespoon vegetable shortening
  • 1 cup plus 1 tablespoon margarine
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 4 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup nuts (walnuts or pecans)

Instructions

  1. Cream together the vegetable shortening and margarine with the granulated sugar; add eggs one at a time, beating after each addition.
  2. Mix together the sifted flour, cocoa powder, and salt; add to the creamed mixture and blend well.
  3. Add vanilla extract; blend and fold in the nuts, blending slightly.
  4. Pour the batter into a greased and floured 8 x 8-inch pan.
  5. Bake at 350°F for 30 minutes.
  6. Cool completely before cutting.
