Ingredients

  • 1 loaf (1 lb.) French bread
  • 1/2 cup margarine (soft)
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped onions or chives
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 eggs, separated
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheese (Mozzarella, Velveeta, or American)

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cut the French bread into 1-inch intervals without slicing all the way through, creating a loaf with sections.
  3. Mix margarine, garlic powder, and chopped onions or chives until well combined.
  4. Spoon the margarine mixture between the bread slices and spread evenly over the loaf.
  5. Wrap the loaf in foil and place it on an ungreased baking sheet.
  6. Bake for 15 minutes.
  7. While the bread is baking, beat the egg whites until stiff.
  8. Separately, beat the egg yolks until thick.
  9. Fold the egg yolks and shredded cheese into the egg whites.
  10. When the loaf is baked, fold back the foil to create a skirt around the bread.
  11. Spoon the egg mixture over the loaf.
  12. Bake until the topping is golden brown, about 4 minutes.
