Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup margarine, softened or melted
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)
  • 1/4 cup sugar

Instructions

  1. Mix sugar, margarine, eggs, milk, flour, baking powder, and chopped nuts (if using) in the order listed.
  2. Pour batter into a greased loaf pan.
  3. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 50 to 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  4. Meanwhile, mix 1/4 cup sugar with juice from a fresh lemon.
  5. Heat the lemon-sugar mixture slowly until it becomes clear.
  6. Pour the lemon glaze over the hot baked bread.
  7. Let stand for 15 minutes to allow the glaze to set.
  8. Remove the bread from the pan and transfer to a wire rack to cool.
