- Cream margarine and sugar together.
- Sift flour, soda, and salt, then add to the creamed mixture. The dough will be quite thick.
- Add oats and work in with hands to form a thick mixture.
- Divide the dough in half.
- Use a 13 x 9-inch pan for assembly.
- Rub the pan with shortening.
- Crumble half of the dough evenly over the pan and pat down firmly.
- Finely chop the dates and mix with sugar and enough water to moisten.
- Cook the date mixture over fire until thick, then let cool.
- Spread the cooled date mixture evenly over the crust in the pan.
- Crumble the remaining dough over the top of the date filling.
