  1. Whisk together the egg and milk in a bowl.
  2. Add the bread cubes to the egg mixture and toss to coat.
  3. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Gradually stir in just enough flour until the mixture sticks together.
  5. Divide the mixture into 2 equal portions and form into balls.
  6. Gently drop the dumplings into boiling water.
  7. Simmer until the dumplings rise to the top, about 10 minutes.
  8. Remove with a slotted spoon, drain, and serve hot.
