Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups melted shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups molasses
  • 6 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 3 teaspoons baking soda
  • 3 teaspoons ginger
  • 3 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 3 cups hot water

Instructions

  1. Combine melted shortening, sugar, and molasses in a large mixing bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix flour, salt, baking soda, ginger, and cinnamon.
  3. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing well.
  4. Stir in hot water until the batter is smooth and well blended.
  5. Pour the batter into a prepared baking dish.
  6. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 45 to 60 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
