Ingredients

  • 8 oz Gouda cheese
  • 1 Tbsp milk
  • 2 drops red pepper sauce
  • 1 Tbsp dry white wine or apple juice
  • 1 tsp prepared mustard

Instructions

  1. Unwrap the Gouda cheese and let it stand at room temperature until softened.
  2. Make four 2 1/2-inch intersecting cuts on the top of the cheese ball to form petals, cutting completely through the plastic casing.
  3. Carefully pull back each section of casing, curling the points around your finger.
  4. Scoop out the cheese, leaving a 1/4-inch wall to create a shell.
  5. Refrigerate the cheese shell.
  6. Mash the cheese with a fork.
  7. Blend in the milk, white wine or apple juice, prepared mustard, and red pepper sauce.
  8. Fill the shell with the cheese mixture.
  9. Cover and refrigerate for at least 3 hours.
  10. One hour before serving, remove the cheese in the shell from the refrigerator to soften.

Tips & Substitutions

For a creamier texture, consider adding a bit more milk or a splash of cream to the cheese mixture. If Gouda isn't available, try substituting with a similar cheese like Havarti or Fontina. To enhance flavor, experiment with different types of mustard or even add herbs like chives or dill. This recipe can also be adapted with a variety of cheeses for unique twists.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the Gouda Burst as a delightful appetizer alongside crackers, sliced baguette, or fresh vegetables. It pairs beautifully with a glass of white wine or apple juice. Storage & Reheating

Store any leftover Gouda Burst in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. To enjoy it warm again, gently reheat in the oven at a low temperature until just softened, being careful not to melt it completely. The flavors will develop even further after a day in the fridge.
