Nut Horns, or Rozky, are flaky, buttery pastries filled with nuts, perfect for festive occasions or as sweet treats with a dusting of powdered sugar. Suitable for all ages.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb butter
  • 2 Tbsp lard or Crisco
  • 6 c flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 c lukewarm milk
  • 2 Tbsp sugar
  • 2 small cakes yeast
  • 3 whole eggs
  • 5 egg whites

Instructions

  1. Combine flour, sugar, and salt in a bowl.
  2. Work butter into the flour mixture with your fingers until well incorporated.
  3. Crumble yeast into lukewarm milk and let it sit until bubbly.
  4. Add egg yolks to the yeast mixture and stir.
  5. Combine the yeast mixture and egg yolks with the flour mixture, working into a firm dough.
  6. Wrap the dough and refrigerate overnight.
  7. When ready, roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thickness.
  8. Spread filling over the rolled dough, then roll up into a log and shape into a crescent.
  9. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
