Ingredients

  • 4 cups flour
  • 2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 Tbsp shortening
  • 1 1/4 cups milk

Instructions

  1. Sift the dry ingredients together four times.
  2. Mix in the shortening, breaking it up with a fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Stir in the milk to form a soft dough or ball.
  4. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and roll out to about 1/2 to 3/4-inch thickness.
  5. Cut out biscuits with a biscuit cutter and place them on an ungreased baking sheet, not touching each other.
  6. Bake in a preheated oven at 450°F for 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown.
