Ingredients

  • 4 1/4 to 4 3/4 cups flour
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 pound butter

Instructions

  1. Cream the butter and add the brown sugar, beating well until blended.
  2. Gradually add about 4 1/4 cups of flour and mix until the dough cracks, using hands if necessary.
  3. Roll out the dough to a thickness of 1/2 to 3/4 inch.
  4. Cut the dough into desired shapes and place on ungreased baking sheets.
  5. Decorate with cut-up cherries on top of each piece.
  6. Bake in a slow oven at 275° to 300° F for 20 to 35 minutes until medium brown.
  7. Cool the cookies on a rack.
  8. Store tightly covered; they may also be frozen.
