Ingredients

  • 1 c. molasses
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 c. Crisco
  • 3/4 tsp. cloves
  • 3/4 tsp. ginger
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. buttermilk
  • 3/4 tsp. nutmeg
  • 3 tsp. soda
  • flour

Instructions

  1. Mix the ingredients and add enough plain flour to make a stiff dough.
  2. Divide into 12 equal parts and knead each part on a surface sprinkled with self-rising flour.
  3. Pat into a ruffled edge pie pan.
  4. Bake at 350° for 10 to 12 minutes.
  5. When layers cool, put sweetened, spiced applesauce between layers.
  6. Dried apples are also good between layers.
  7. Use your favorite spices in applesauce to taste.
  8. Makes two 6-layer cakes.
